High Risk Pregnancy

We wish a smooth motherhood journey for every pregnant lady. But sometimes unavoidable high-risk factors make life of both mother & baby at risk.

Few common risk factors are:

  • Anaemia – Which means low hemoglobin (YaKhoon Ki kami). It could be nutritional or hereditary. Low hemoglobin compromises mother’s safety during antenatal period, delivery & baby’s growth etc.
  • High blood pressure – Hypertension before and during pregnancy will put extra load on mother’s heart. It increases the risk of seizures. Baby could be premature, and growth retarded etc.
  • Diabetes (Pre-existing or Gestational) – Women can have spontaneous miscarriage and babies can suffer from, hypoglycemia, Hypocalcemia and birth defects etc. Strict sugar control and monitoring can ensure safe delivery.
  • Cholestasis (De-ranged LFT)– The commonest symptom is itching of whole body specially palm and soles which occur due to inadequate clearance of bile acids by mother’s liver. These bile acids are toxic to baby’s heart and can result in sudden fetal compromise.
  • Polyamnios and Oligamnios – Water around the baby is essential but excess or less respectively can be risky and needs to be manage individually.
  • Previous Cesarean- Scar on the uterus may or may not be strong enough to with stand labour pains in repeat pregnancy. Special attention and assessment are required in such cases to ensure safe delivery.
  • Pre-Mature Delivery – Spontaneous in Pre-Term Labour Pains or induced in case of severe IUGR requires comprehensive gynae and neonatal care.
  • Fibroids – These are noncancerous tumors in uterus which can increase risks of preterm labour, abnormality in the feotus, placenta previa and miscarriages.

Pregnancy is a complex phenomenon and there can be a multitude of these risk factors in a single patient.
